We found the colorful user interface and handy tips to be a really strong pro for creating an online legal document with LawDepot. (Oops, we weren't even trying to make that rhyme, it just happened 😀).

While LawDepot has put a lot of energy into creating a beautiful user interface, the legal documents themselves are a bit lack-lustre. They are not always well drafted. The language tends to be a bit "olde-worlde". Certainly, content could be simplified to make it easier for the lay-person to understand.

You can only download the documents in PDF or HTML format. Unfortunately, LawDepot does not give you the option to download a Word version of its documents. So, you can't simply make minor edits or format the documents to your liking. That is, unless you paste the HTML content into a Word document and then re-format it.

In our view, the downside with LawDepot is it's tricky pricing model. The most enticing of the 3 license options is, of course, the Free Trial. Who doesn't want something for free? But, beware, while you get 7 days of Free Trial, if you fail to cancel, you'll be charged a hefty $39 per month ongoing.

So, if you don't monitor the monthly charges on your credit card, it's easy not to notice a charge like this until you've already made many unnecessary payments and by then it's too late to claim a refund.

On the plus side, LawDepot make it easy to cancel by selecting "My Account", once you've logged in to the site. So, they are transparent about their limited offer for accessing free documents.

If you intend to use the service to create a few legal documents in a year, it's much better value to sign up for the annual subscription (1 year for $60) and skip the Free Trial which renews at $39 per month (1 year for $468).

On balance, LawDepot provides an excellent service, with a fairly comprehensive array of commonly used legal templates. This covers Wills, Powers of Attorney and other documents for individuals. The site also incudes resources for business users like a Business Plan, Partnership Agreement Template and many other popular legal documents. It's a solid option for creating basic DIY documents. However, LawDepot does not offer help from a lawyer in completing its documents.

About LawDepot

Individuals, as well as small business operators, will find LawDepot a useful service for creating online legal templates.

LawDepot® is a business name of Sequiter Inc, a Canadian company. So while they are selling legal templates in Australia, the company is not in fact registered in Australia and you won't be able to make any claim against them in Australia if anything goes wrong.

The most awesome feature of LawDepot is its simple user-interface with lovely big buttons and attractive graphics. Finally, you can have fun completing a legal document by selecting images. It's not all dry, verbose text anymore. LawDepot has been around for a long time (since 2001) and keeps "up-ing" their game. They claim to have serviced over 10 million users. They are one of the world's most established online legal template providers. They offer standard legal forms and documents in the USA, UK, Canada and Austraila.

Fun fact: Some people talk about LawDepot as Law Depot. But that's not the correct name. It is actually one word, LawDepot.
